Tips To Replace Shower Pan Parts

If you could replace shower pan parts by just unbolting a few components and bolting in a replacement that would be a real plus. Unfortunately such is not the case. Getting at faulty shower pans is a demolition project.

That's true because the shower pans that are in most showers are made of layers of mortar and some kind of liner layer. Often the liner part is galvanized steel or even lead and in both cases over time the material in contact with water just sort of fades away and at that point water starts to wander around the bathroom and get in all kinds of places it need not be in.

To replace shower pan liner parts requires the removal of the base and part of the walls. Often all the tile is replaced when the liner is replaced but if the walls are still in good shape the walls can be saved except for a couple of layers of tile at the bottom of the walls. You never can get tile that matches old tile so if wall tiles are left tiles that replace any wall tiles will have to be chosen based on blending rather than matching.

Shower floor options are several when you go back with tile.

You can go back with a mortar base or with ready to tile shower bases.

If you are replacing an acrylic shower pan with tile then you still get to pick from some options for the bases.

Replace A Shower Pan After Demolition

Busting out a shower base just takes some hammer and chisel work and then scooping out the debris. Any rot must be dealt with and sometimes that means getting into the walls even if those walls still look sound. Water behind walls is a disaster but may that really is not a problem for you.

To replace a shower pan is not a trivial matter but once the floor is busted out and you can see what the leaking shower has done putting the base back is quite a job. Really the building of a shower base is just a series of fairly simple tasks. It is true though that installing ceramic tile in a shower is more complicated that it appears when you look at a finished ceramic shower floor.
