The Schluter Shower Pan Difference
A Shluter shower pan works because of one difference when installing tile shower pans whether of the ready to tile variety or the mortar based heavy duty traditional kind of shower.
By using a special liner membrane sheet that is lightweight and waterproof, Kerdi or Schluter can make several kinds of surfaces waterproof with just the membrane and matching adhesive.
These people make a line of foam shower pan bases that can be just set in place and then covered with the liner and then at that point the base is ready for tile. That makes a base that is really much like the Tile-Redi or similar tile ready shower pans except the waterproofing is in the liner sheet.
There's more though.
Like the Tile-Redi showers there are only so many standard configurations and even with the Tile-Redi bases the custom tiled shower sizes are very steep in the cost department.
What you can do though with the Kerdi liner is use it with a mortar base to make a shower any old size.
Now all the layers and liner membrane in the mud are out.
All you need to do is just put mortar in at the right slope but just one layer and no complications either.
Once you have a base then the liner sheet can just go right over the top and that builds your waterproof layer with that one sheet.
The Schluter shower pan method is a flexible way to tile a shower using the liner membrane and the Kerdi foam shower base or a simple mortar base.
