Shower Base Pan -- The Others
A tile ready shower base pan from Kerdi or TileRedi works perfectly. Here are other routes to a dry shower at somewhat less money.
At ShowerBase.com, KBRS offers factory direct versions of several tile ready shower pan systems. Two are the Tile Basin product and the Qwick Slope method. Here are the basics of the two systems.
The Tile Basin product includes a foam base with a sealed top surface. Bedded in a layer of mortar and coupled with a properly installed drain, this pan eliminates all the mortar sloping games normally associate with tile showers.
With a sealed top surface, the tile can be put on right over the base and thus the sealed surface is just right below the tiles. That eliminates the build-up of water within the base, the cause of all kinds of shower problems.
Another option presented by KBRS is the Qwick Slope. What you get with this is a sloped base which you set in a thin layer of mud layed float over the subfloor. Then the waterproofing goes right over the base. The base itself is not waterproofed.
The waterproof layer is painted on as a paint surface would be. It's called and elastomeric coating. So you end up with a base over the subfloor and then you paint on a flexible, rubber-like coating over the base.
Less expensive than most of the other methods and easily seen as a do it yourself project, the longevity of this shower base pan system depends on the painted on layer staying in one piece without any cracks.
