A Tile Shower Drain In Just The Right Spot

A tile shower drain has two levels. One is the one you see in the floor. The other is down inside the floor. That's the one that is sealed to a waterproof membrane to catch any and all water that makes it through the floor of the shower.

Here's the question. How can you get the shower drain at the right height when a shower pan is built in so many layers?

It's really simple.

The distance from the top of the drain clamping ring up to the top of the shower drain is just about equal to the thickness of three layers. The layers are the top mortar layer, the thinset layer for the tile and the tile itself.

The adjustable drain barrel and strainer assembly can be set at about the right height and then adjusted to fit the finished floor height.

Remember too...

You can install the drain base right on the subfloor. Or better yet, install the drain base about 1 1/4 inches above the subfloor. Then work deck mud under the drain base and slope it up from the drain base. That's makes the first mud layer thick enough that there's little danger of that first layer crumbling and coming apart. Pros do it both ways.

Now to the art work...

That's because the next step is the shower pan curb.
